Minimally invasive dentistry?

What's that supposed to mean? Well in the olden days, we often needed to trim teeth down to almost nothing before we could effectively crown them. A crown needed to entirely encase the tooth to allow it to stay on. This is very destructive to the tooth.
Now however, given the right circumstances, we can remove the affected portion of the tooth and bond on a 'lid'. This is hard wearing, tooth coloured and we have been minimal on our invasion into the tooth. Here's my example of Mr T. who needs strong teeth as he regularly gets crazed squirrels throwing themselves at his window whilst he works! (but that's another story) .

Did you know that silver amalgam fillings contain at least 50% mercury?

It's so difficult to 'prove' the toxic effects of mercury that it seems to be enough justification for dentists to continue to place them in patients mouths.

We have never placed amalgam fillings at Warlingham, and we have special filters to capture the amalgam and mercury residues to prevent them poisoning the water supply.

It's so hot!

Well actually that is not true. We have created a little sanctuary of peace and tranquility, right by the waterfall in our treatment room. The waterfall nicely sets the scene. The aircon keeps you there. It has caused entirely different problems in this hot weather. We have had to ask patients to leave!

I broke my tooth

Louise my receptionist broke her tooth. Chaos ensued, phone calls were made, begging texts were sent. Any way, calm was restored and the tooth was fixed. This is the video of how we fixed it.

Emily brushes her teeth- quicker download!

Emily has decided to help her dad show other children how to brush their teeth.So we made a quick video of Emily brushing her teeth. Not quite BAFTA material, but she was willing.
Hopefully this video might help parents of similarly young children with their night time brushing. It's certainly a chore in our house, but if your children see Emily brushing, then by the wonders of peer pressure they may too!

Richard has a baby girl!!

Rebecca Megan was born 22nd February 2007. Weighing in at 7llb 3oz in ye old English and 3.26 kilos in brand new English. Mum and baby are doing well including big sister Emily who is chuffed to bits to have a real live doll. Scary thought. So apologies for lack of blogs, I've had some nappies to do!

The Department of Health recommend that silver fillings are niether placed or removed during pregancy because bacteria can cross the placenta to the baby. This is precautionary as there is no evidence that a pregnant mother's fillings can affect her baby.
However in the event of a mum-to-be having a dental infection or toothache, we would recommend seeking treatment, as the bacteria present from the infection could be harmful. We would also take emergency x-rays if required. The risk again to the unborn child is low.
It is vital that you inform your dentist if you think that you maybe pregnant. They will avoid taking any x-rays unless you specifically have any problem causing pain.
As with silver fillings the dentist will avoid any non essential treatment such as cosmetic work.
